“Janice McNab’s Tanks and Chairs swirl with ghost bodies we never see. Three large flotation tank paintings look like 21st century sarcophagi—glass-fibre coffins for the living dead but titled Meadow and River in accordance with the astonishing doublespeak of the cosmetics industry that the images are sourced from. Their partners, The Chair Paintings, are retired aircraft seats that were found in a London props warehouse. Their isolated and broken bodies are portrayed in narrative vacuums that allow us to imagine them as strangely alive stand-ins for everyman while at the same time to be filled with death. Together, the two series mark the stress lines of our neo-liberal pursuit of comfort and diversion.”
