Janice McNab — D.I.Y.

The ways our bodies are entwined with seemingly overwhelming global issues can also be seen in D.I.Y (Do-It-Yourself). These are paintings of post-apocalyptic bodies, impossibly made, barely held together with cable ties and insulation strips. The pressure to consume, to value sweet treats and weekends away, to ignore pollution as a necessary side effect of ‘added value,’ is understood as a bodily pressure. We fall apart along with the world, and in this series, egg-timers are strapped into now ageing female bodies and the sun is a paper plate. A woman balances a plastic world between her legs while another has an inflated, single breast.
